Because the funding for the Huron Public Library is provided by the Huron City Government, residents of Huron are entitled to become a registered borrower of the Huron Public Library.
Residency will be determined by current driver's license and/or other ID. People living outside of the Huron City Limits may apply for the appropriate type of card as listed below. Types of library cards:
1. Resident: People owning or renting property within the city limits of Huron may apply for a Huron Resident Library Card. There is no fee for this type of card.
2. Non-residents of Huron, Rural residents of Beadle County: People owning or renting property in Beadle County, outside the Huron City Limits, may be issued an annual
Beadle County Family library card. With this card, the family may borrow up to 20 items at one time.
UPDATE: Beginning January 01, 2010, Beadle County Commission will discontinue
funding Beadle County Family cards. County residents may purchase an
annual Non-Resident Family card for $20/year/family.
3. Non-residents of Huron, Rural residents living outside of Beadle County: People owning or renting property outside of Beadle County may purchase an annual Non-Resident Family card for $20/year/family. With this card, the family may borrow up to 20 items at one time.
4. College students, Other students (Driver's license address is anything other than a Huron city address): A student may apply for a deposit library card, $20 deposit/school term. With this card, the student may borrow up to 3 books at one time. At the end of the school year, the deposit will be refunded if all items are returned and all fines paid.
5. Schools outside the Huron City Limits: Schools may apply for a school card, $25/school year. With this card, 25 items may be borrowed at one time.
Book Collection: All of the latest books by your favorite authors from Austen to Zane Grey. Books on every subject imaginable and for every age will help you live life to the fullest.
Paperback Collection: An extensive collection of romances, mysteries, titles for young adults and children, and much more.
Large Print Collection: A large collection of books by well-known and popular authors in an easy-to-read format.
Magazines: Approximately 110 titles covering business, news, health, hobbies, fashion, gardening, home, and other subjects.
Newspapers: Six South Dakota papers, plus USA TODAY, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, and others. A complete file (mostly on microfilm) of the local Huron paper.
Audio Cassettes and CDs: A growing collection of adult audio cassettes and compact discs offers a variety of best sellers, works by favorite authors, and popular non-fiction. A new collection of Juvenile Audio Cassettes offers book-and-tape packs. Children may read and listen to the book at the same time. (NOTE: CD collection does not contain music CDs.)
Computer Software: A small collection of computer software is available for home loan by adults.
South Dakota Collection: Books about the state and/or by South Dakota authors. Includes some unusual pamphlets and clippings.
Art Prints: IN STORAGE until more display space is available.
Videos and DVDs: Approximately 1800 videos are available for loan to adults. Includes items for adults and children.

At the discretion of the library directory, a patron may replace lost
materials and pay a processing fee.
NO REFUNDS on lost materials after three months. If lost item that has
been paid is returned before three months, subtract the maximum fine +
50¢, and then refund the remaining amount. Please fill out refund
request slip and give to technical services librarian.
We are happy to answer your questions whether presented in person or by telephone. We will also help you use library materials, indexes, and the computerized on-line catalog.
You may borrow books, magazine articles, and other materials not available at the Huron Public Library from the South Dakota State Library or elsewhere. Please inquire at the reference desk for additional information about this computerized service.
Internet use time may be reserved for one-half hour sessions of Internet searching. Only one session/day may be reserved. No E-Mail addresses/account available through the Huron Public Library. Many companies like Yahoo and Hotmail offer free web-based e-mail accounts. Copies may be printed at $.05/copy. Material may be downloaded on a disk purchased at the Huron Public Library for $1. Parents are encouraged to explore the Internet WITH their children!
HURON PUBLIC LIBRARY INTERNET POLICY

7. Users will not disturb other library patrons and will follow rules of polite and appropriate QUIET behavior. No more than TWO people will be allowed per computer. Other library patrons will not “hover” over current Internet users. Please ask library staff for help if someone is using a computer during your assigned time.
8. No e-mail accounts are given through the library. Library can provided limited instruction on obtaining e-mail through free providers (Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.)
9. NO CHATS! NONE! You will receive one verbal warning. The next violation will result in loss of Internet privileges for the day. Additional violations will result in longer banned periods
10. Do not save items to the hard drive (C:) of the computers. The C: drive is cleared at the end of each day. Each computer has a USB port for jump drives, memory card adapters, and some cameras. Personal devices may not be compatible with library computer equipment.
11. You may make black and white paper copies through the library printer at $.05 per sheet. You will be charged for all pages that print. Please ask for help of you are having problems with the printers. Pay for copies at the front desk. Sorry, NO color printing available in the library.
WARNING: Although the library uses anti-virus software on library computers, this will not completely protect you from the chance of getting a virus. Software downloaded from the Internet may contain a virus. Wi-fi users need to have virus-checking software on personal computers. The Huron Public Library is not responsible for damage to a patron’s computer, or for any loss of data, damage nor liability that may occur from patron use of the library’s computers or Wi-Fi network.
